Presbyopia

Presbyopia, also called age-related long-sightedness, usually affects patients over the age of 45. Its symptom is that the eye loses the ability to focus on nearby objects.

What’s the problem?

LENS
Vetchozrakosť

Presbyopia is not a typical refractive disease. It is caused by the physiological ageing of the intraocular lens. From a certain age, it affects everyone, and as yet no preventive measures can be taken.
Typical patients are those over the age of 45 who use reading glasses. Sometimes it is also called short arm syndrome, because patients with presbyopia move away the items they are reading as far as possible from their eyes.

What are the options for correcting presbyopia?

INTRACOR
Vetchozrakost

One of the options for correcting presbyopia is the treatment method
This surgery is performed using a femtosecond laser, where a practically immediate result is one of its great advantages. Vision is realistically improved within a few hours of the surgery.
The operation lasts around 20 seconds and does not require the use of surgical Equipment and instruments
During surgery, there is no lesion to the surface of the cornea or any other part of the eye, thus minimising any risk of infection.
Pred operáciou je samozrejme nutné vykonať komplexné očné vyšetrenie, na základe ktorého sa dá zhodnotiť, či je pacient vhodný na tento typ zákroku.

  • Suitable candidates are patients over the age of 45, with slight long-sightedness, i.e. with distance dioptres of +0,5 to +1,25 and for reading of +2,0 to +3,25.
  • For several hours (usually 1 to 2 hours) after the surgery, the patient’s vision is foggy in the operated eye
  • Vision close up is noticeably improved, just 2 hours after the surgery
  • It is usually possible to return to ordinary tasks on the following day, as long as the eye is not painful.

PRELEX
Vetchozrakost

Another option for dealing with presbyopia after the age of 45 is the PRELEX method (PREsbyopic Lens EX/*change) or CLE (Clear Lens Extraction).
This method consists of replacing the natural lens which has lost the ability to focus on close/distant objects with an artificial intraocular lens which provides patients with both high-quality distance vision and close-up vision.
The artificial lens is made to measure for the patient and our surgeon recommends the most suitable one for your individual needs (videnie na blízko, na diaľku i na strednú vzdialenosť). The lenses are implanted permanently and you will not be able to feel like, just as you can’t feel your tooth fillings.
The lenses are produced using the best quality materials which are not affected by age-related changes. For this reason, they ensure the long-term transparency and stability of the eye lens.
The ideal patient is over the age of 45 and needs plus glasses for distant and close objects.

  • Possible removal of all types of dioptres (simultaneous correction of short-sightedness, farsightedness and even astigmatism in one operation)
  • We recommend performing the PRELEX surgery with the assistance of a femtosecond laser, which is more sparing of the eye tissues.
  • In the future, there will be no need for a cataract operation
  • The surgery lasts approximately 15 minutes and is completely painless.

Post-operative care

For several hours after the surgery, the patient’s vision is foggy in the operated eye.
Close-up vision improves clearly as early as 2 hours after surgery. It is usually possible to return to ordinary tasks the following day.
The eye does not hurt but can run slightly. We recommend patients not to wear glasses if the light conditions are good, in order to let the brain accustom itself to its new optical state and the eye’s function.
This process takes different lengths of time for each patient, but usually no longer than three months. However, it’s impossible that reading glasses might be necessary in worsened light conditions.

    • FEMTOSEKUNDOVÝ LASER VICTUS
      Victus Femtosecond laser

      Victus Femtosecond laser

      FEMTOSEKUNDOVÝ LASER VICTUS

The UVEA Mediklinik is the first and only clinic in Slovakia which has a combined Victus femtosecond laser from the German company Technolas PV.

The advantage of the Victus laser is the high precision and care for the eye tissues. Certain types of procedures can be performed entirely without the eye being touched by the instrument, but only by the laser ray. Technolas PV has chosen the UVEA Mediklinik eye clinic as its reference and training centre.

      What can this device do?

      LRCS

Enables surgical procedures to be performed with high precision for cataract operations. The laser performs a capsulorex and lens fragmentation very precisely and safely.

      INTRACOR

A surgical method which corrects worsened vision close up, by creating micro circles in the corneal stroma, thus achieving the curve of part of the cornea and correcting the eye’s optic system.

      CUSTOMFLAP

Creating a corneal flap during LASIK surgery

      CUSTOMSHAPE

Therapeutic procedures on the cornea such as ceratoplastics, tunnels for corneal rings and astigmatic keratotomy.

      Operačný mikroskop ZEISS Lumera

At present the best surgical microscope for eye micro-surgery in the world. In the operating theatre, a unique 3D HD stereoscopic system is also installed with the microscope, enabling transmission of the operations, their recording and imaging in 3D HD (three-dimensionally). This system is unique in Europe and was specially developed for the needs of the UVEA Mediklinik eye clinic.

      Navigačný systém Callisto Eye

Callisto Eye is a unique eye monitoring system. It was the first to be installed in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and right in the UVEA Mediklinik eye clinic in Martin. For patients, it is an irreplaceable guarantee of safety and precision, thanks to its live transfer of localisation marks into the surgeon’s microscope during intraocular operations, such as cataract operations or ceratoplastic surgery. The Callisto eye navigation system is capable of monitoring and adapting to eye movements in real time during the operation.

      Biometrický system IOL Master 700

The IOL Master 700 by ZEISS is used for biometric measurements; this measurement is key for the precise calculation of the intraocular lens and for excluding the need to wear glasses following a cataract operation or following PRELEX surgery to remove the need for reading glasses.
The main advantage of this instrument is its extremely precise measurement of the length of the eye and curve of the cornea and its precise calculation of the optical mass of the implanted lens.

    • CONSTELLATION ALCON
      Constellation phacoemulsification device

      Constellation phacoemulsification device

      CONSTELLATION ALCON

This is a multifunctional surgical device which enables us to perform operations on the anterior and posterior eye segment. We use it for the emulsification of the intraocular lens or for operations of the vitreous body and retina, even in the most complicated cases. The emulsification of an opaque or clear intraocular lens takes place with the use of a very low ultrasound energy, thus leading to a minimal traumatisation to eye structures during the operation.

      The device is equipped with

      A torso mode of phacoemulsification

      Integrated xenon light source

      High-speed vitrectomy system

      Integrated endolaser

      CIRRUS HD-OCT ZEISS

At the UVEA Mediklinik, we have the Cirrus coherent tomograph which is one of the most modern, highly useful examination and imaging device aimed at the detailed examination of posterior and anterior eye structures such as the retina, optic nerve and cornea. We use it for rapid and simple diagnostics before most eye procedures. Thanks to its perfect optics, the Cirrus HD-OCT also offers our doctors highly professional analyses and graphical imaging of the results obtained. As a result, doctors can monitor the development of a wide range of eye diseases.
