Macular degeneration
The yellow spot or macula is the place on the retina with the clearest vision.
The disease appears as a degeneration of the yellow spot and is age-related.
Smokers, people with an unhealthy lifestyle or diabetes over the age of fifty are particularly at risk.
What’s the problem?
YELLOW SPOT

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a disease which affects the quality of vision.
It is caused by degenerative changes in the area of the yellow spot. The result is blurred vision, even a blot in the centre of the field of vision and can end in blindness. It mostly affects only one eye, however, in time the other eye also contracts the disease.
We differentiate two types of AMD.
The wet type is less common. Here, blood vessels grow under the retina, causing the central part of the retina to bulge, and even bleeding is possible, which can lead to its detachment.
The dry type is more widespread; the deterioration of vision is slower and is caused by a decrease in sensory receptors and a thinning of the retinal pigment epithelium.

How is it treated?
ANTI-VEGF

At present, only a conservative treatment exists for this type of disease.
We can try the wet form by applying special injections (growth factor anti-bodies, so-called anti-VEGF) directly inside the eye.
We can only treat the dry type with nutritional supplements and by lowering risk factors (restricting smoking, reducing obesity, treating high blood pressure and lowering cholesterol levels)
- The function of the Anti-VEGF treatment is to lower the activity of growth factors and thus stop the unwanted growth of new blood vessels in the eye.
- The application of anti-VEGF takes a few seconds, and the procedure takes a few minutes including the preparation time.
- The application itself of anti-VEGF is not painful.

Early self-diagnosis
Macular degeneration can be exposed using the “Amsler test”.
Cover one eye, and look at the dot in the middle of the picture from a distance of 30 to 40 cm. All the lines and the central dot should be straight and clearly visible.
If some of them are wavy or disappear, we recommend a consultation in our eye clinic, in particular if you are over the age of fifty.
